Federal Member States (FMS) leaders who have been meeting in Dhusamareb have closed the door on the calls for universal suffrage polls.
Somalia was scheduled to hold universal suffrage polls in November 2020 before the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) postponed them.
A previously planned meeting between FMS leaders and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) from July 5-8 failed to take place.
Consequently, FMS leaders organized their own meeting in Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug State.
On Sunday, the regional leaders said the country was unprepared for a one-person-one-vote poll this year.
Instead, the leaders have called for a politically negotiated deal.
The leaders who attended the meeting included President Ahmed Islam Mohamed Madobe and President Mohamed Abdi Ware of Jubbaland and HirShabelle respectively.
President Abdiaziz Lafta-Gareen and President Said Abdullahi Deni of the Southwest and Puntland states were also present.
President Ahmed Kariye Qoorqoor of Galmudug State hosted the four leaders.
In a joint communiqué, the leaders said a politically negotiated deal was essential to prevent chaos arising out of extending the term of the current FGS leadership illegally.
