Foreign Affairs Ministry Reasserts Somaliland’s Independence from Somalia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a communiqué reasserting the independence of Somaliland from Somalia.

In a press statement the ministry issued on Monday September 21, it reminded the world that Somaliland is independent from Somalia.

Somaliland was once one with Somalia.

However, it broke away from Somalia in 1991 at the onset of the Civil War that came to define the country’s history during the 1990s.

Somalia has never enjoyed political stability since then.

On the other hand, Somaliland has been an island of peace in an otherwise war-torn and conflict-ravaged region.

Last week, Somalia’s leaders signed an elections deal that also mentioned Somaliland’s political leaders being elected in Mogadishu.

Somaliland’s foreign affairs ministry has not taken kindly to that condition.

In its press release, it reminded the United Nations, African Union, the European Union, and the international community of its independence.

The government of Somaliland reminded the world that it would not participate in Somalia’s elections as it has its own to organize.
