Former Mogadishu Mayor Says Somalia Cannot Afford Electoral Chaos

Thabit Mohamed, a former Mayor of Mogadishu, has urged leaders in Somalia to do all that is in their power to prevent political crisis in the nation.

Mohamed, who also serves as the leader of People’s Power party (PPP), stated that Somalia could not afford a period of electoral turmoil.

He also mentioned that the country is incapable of withstanding a period of political waste and factional rivalry.

The ex-Mayor said this on September 12 when addressing the country via a short video.

He uttered these comments to urge the country’s political leadership to agree on any elections-related disputes that remain unresolved.

Currently, political leaders in the country are meeting in Mogadishu to discuss issues such as electoral model and elections timeline.

The Mogadishu meeting is between leaders of the Federal Member States (FMS) and Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
