Former Puntland Minister Says Somalis Burdened with High Cost of Electricity

Ali H. Warsame, a former minister in the regional state of Puntland, says that Somalis are burdened with the high cost of electricity.

According to Warsame, the cost of electricity in Somalia is among the highest in the world.

The figures he quoted show that Somalis pay between $0.40 and $1 per kWh.

In Warsame’s view, such high costs are an impediment to the economic development of the East African nation.

Warsame said that the government should consider reducing the cost of electricity.

With nearly 50 percent of the nation’s population living below the poverty line, the cost of electricity adds an unnecessary burden.
