Former Somali Leaders Urge Inclusive Dialogue Amid Growing Political Unrest

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant show of unity, four prominent Somali political figures — including three former Prime Ministers and a former Speaker of the People’s Assembly — convened today to address the escalating political and security crisis facing Somalia.

The meeting, hosted by former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, brought together Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, Abdi Farah Shirdoon, and former Speaker Mohamed Mursal. The leaders held wide-ranging discussions on the current trajectory of the country’s governance and expressed deep concern over what they described as “profound challenges” threatening Somalia’s stability and progress.

“It is with great honor that I convened today with these esteemed statesmen,” said Roble in a statement following the meeting. “Our discussions concluded with a shared recognition that the nation continues to face profound challenges that threaten its stability and progress.”

The leaders jointly criticized the policies of the current administration, asserting that its governance does not reflect the will or interests of the Somali people. They highlighted growing domestic and international alarm over increasing political tensions and instability.

Calling for unity and wisdom, the former leaders urged all political stakeholders to engage in inclusive national dialogue and to heed the counsel of Somalia’s respected elders and political figures. “Only through unity and collective wisdom can we navigate this precarious juncture in our nation’s history,” Roble emphasized.

They further advocated for a renewed focus on national reconciliation, consensus-building, and the swift establishment of an agreed-upon electoral framework to ensure a credible and timely political transition.

“We remain committed to supporting all efforts that restore stability, strengthen democratic processes, and safeguard Somalia’s national interests,” the statement concluded.

This rare gathering of senior statesmen signals a potential turning point in Somalia’s political discourse, as calls intensify for inclusive dialogue and genuine reform to address the nation’s pressing challenges.
