Former Somali President Condemns NIEC for Postponing Elections

Former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has condemned the decision by the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) to postpone the elections due in November 2020 and February 2021 respectively.

A day ago, NIEC briefed the federal parliament on its inability to prepare adequately for the upcoming elections. Through its Chairperson, Halima Ismail Ibrahim, NIEC indicated that it is impossible to hold elections in either November 2020 or February 2021.

Somalia was scheduled to hold parliamentary and regional elections in November 2020 before proceeding with presidential polls in February 2021. However, that now seems impossible because of NIEC’s failure to meet the requisite milestones.

Sheikh Mohamud said the announcement was not what the country expected. Furthermore, the ex-President accused the NIEC commissioners of working hard to extend President Mohamed Farmaajo’s term in office.
