Former Somali President Denies Reports Opposition Candidates Want to Delay Polls

A former President of the Federal Republic of Somalia has denied reports that opposition candidates are using the elections impasse to delay polls.

Ex-President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud denied rumors floating around presidential candidates from the opposition are using the elections impasse as a tool for postponing polls.

He said that it is incorrect to view opposition presidential candidates as people who are disinterested in holding elections on time.

According to former President Mohamud, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is solely to blame for failure to hold elections on time.

The former President of Somalia, who has declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential polls, accused FGS of failing to implement the September 17, 2020 agreement.

FGS and Federal Member States (FMS) signed an electoral agreement requiring the country to hold parliamentary and presidential polls in December 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
