Former UN Representative for Somalia Passes Away

Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, a former UN Representative for Somalia, has died at his Tanzanian home.

President John Pombe Magufuli relayed the death of Mahiga, a 74-year old Tanzanian politician and a career diplomat, to the country on Thursday.

Mahiga served as the UN Representative for Somalia between 2010 and 2013.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that he died at his Dodoma home of COVID-19, which has ravaged Tanzania in the recent weeks.

Somalis remember Mahiga for his 2011 role in drafting the Kampala Accord, which forced Prime Minister Mohamed Farmaajo to resign from President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed’s government.
