On Thursday morning, the leaders of Galmudug and Puntland states met in Galkayo to discuss several issues including Somalia’s elections impasse.
After their meeting, a joint statement from the two regional leaders confirmed that they agreed to intervene in Somalia’s elections impasse.
President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland and President Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoorqoor held a joint meeting in Galkayo on December 24.
Later, they issued a joint communiqué announcing that they would be working together to mediate the ongoing electoral dispute in Somalia.
Opposition candidates have voiced their concern over the lack of consensus on election preparation.
Jubbaland’s President Ahmed Islam Madobe has also vowed not to hold elections in the region unless the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) restores Gedo to the local administration.
Deni and Qoorqoor agreed to mediate the differences between FGS, the Federal Member States (FMS), and opposition candidates.
