President Ahmed Duale Haaf of Galmudug State has appointed a regional parliament to be based in Galkayo. On Thursday, the parliament elected its new leadership.
The election happened a day after Ahlu Sunna, a moderate Sufi group, elected Sheikh Mohamed Shakir as the new president in Dhusamareb.
For several years, Sharif worked under Haaf as the Chief Minister in Galmudug State.
On Sunday, Galmudug could get its third president as the pro-FGS parliament holds separate presidential polls in Dhusamareb.
As all that happens, the political standoff in the region continues to widen. In the past, FGS tried severally to install leaders loyal to President Farmaajo’s administration as state leaders.
