Government Responds Swiftly to the Outbreak of Measles in Jubbaland

The Federal Government of Somalia responded swiftly to the outbreak of measles in the semiautonomous region of Jubbaland.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report on August 13, FGS received reports of a possible outbreak of measles in Jubbaland.

The initial report came through the Early Warning and Alert Network (EWARN) that the government had recently put in place.

Somalia’s Ministry of Health received reports that measles had broken out at a camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Jubbaland.

The health ministry, in conjunction with WHO, conducted an initial investigation that reported 11 cases mostly of children diagnosed with measles.

The 11 cases were all at the camp in Kismayo.

They were displaying all the typical symptoms associated with measles that include high-grade fever and rashes to name a few.

Thereafter, the global health body deployed its team of qualified health professionals in Kismayo from July 18-25, 2020.

That team worked closely with officials from the health ministry and a local health partner to treat all the measles patients efficiently.
