Grassroots Organization Commends FEIT for Commitment to Secure 30% Women Representation

A grassroots organization in Somalia has expressed gratitude to the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) for expressing commitment to secure 30 percent women representation in parliament.

LeadNow Somalia, an organization fighting for the rights of women, especially in advocating for increased representation by women in parliament, met with representatives from the FEIT on January 23.

Some of the senior FEIT personnel that LeadNow’s representatives met included Mohamed Hassan Irro, the Chairman of the electoral body.

Additionally, the LeadNow representatives held a meeting with Sacido Carabeto, the FEIT Director in Charge of Gender.

During their meeting, they discussed different mechanisms that FEIT intends to put in place to secure the 30 percent women representation. Apart from that, they also talked about the importance of providing all candidates in the upcoming elections with proper security.

More importantly, LeadNow urged FEIT to ensure that women have access to the information and resources needed to compete favorably with their male counterparts in the upcoming local and parliamentary elections.
