Gulaid Chairs Cabinet Meeting That Approves Composition of Electoral Technical Committee

Mahdi M. Gulaid, Somalia’s newly appointed Acting Prime Minister, chaired a cabinet meeting on Thursday that approved the composition of the elections technical committee.

The technical committee has been receiving members since last week’s Dhusamareb talks between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).

It was formed following the meeting between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and all the five regional leaders.

The immediate former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire had also been at the meeting prior to his removal from office by the House of Representatives.

Farmaajo then appointed Gulaid to act as the new Prime Minister until a permanent one is appointed.

Yesterday, Gulaid chaired the meeting of cabinet ministers that approved the new membership of the elections technical committee.

Consequently, the committee can continue discussing and advising on the upcoming elections scheduled for late 2020 and early 2021.

While chairing the meeting, Gulaid also spoke of the government’s commitment to strengthening the nascent democracy in Somalia.
