Ali Guudlawe, who was elected the President of HirShabelle State, is scheduled to serve for a term of five years after the regional parliament amended the law.
The current law limited each president to a term of four years.
However, that is now set to change after HirShabelle State Parliament passed a new law extending the presidential term by one more year.
Of the 70 Members of Parliament eligible to vote, 66 voted in favor of the new law.
Only three MPs voted against term extension while one absented.
Guudlawe was elected the third President of HirShabelle in mid-November 2020. His term is now expected to end in 2025.
