Hiraan Farmers Receive Water for Farming from Solar Power

Hiraan farmers have solar power to thank for the water that they receive for growing their crops.

The farmers owe a debt of gratitude to Save the Children, an international non-governmental organization (NGO), and the local authority for the water.

Over 300 local farmers have benefited from the water from the solar panels.

The solar-powered systems installed in the area have replaced generators, which initially helped in pumping water from the nearby river.

Farmers say that they no longer have to worry about the high costs of fuel.

They needed fuel to keep their generators running.

Yussuf Ahmed Yalahow, HirShabelle’s Minister of Agriculture, hailed the solar power project for enabling farmers to overcome their challenges and improve productivity.

The new system provides enough water for up to 15 square kilometers of land every day.
