HRC Condemns Somaliland Government’s Closure of Star TV

The Human Rights Center (HRC) has condemned the decision by the government of Somaliland to close Star TV.

Star TV, a privately owned TV station operating in Somaliland’s capital of Hargeisa, was closed mid this week.

HRC accused the government of heavy-handedness through police who are stationed at the premises housing Star TV studios to ensure that it does not open for business.

According to HRC, the police should leave the scene to allow Star TV to resume operations without any undue interference.

HRC has also urged the government to respect the freedom of the media and cease all illegal closures as well as unlawful and unconstitutional detention of journalists in the country.
