IFJ Says the New Somalia Media Law Falls Short of International Standards

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has said the newly signed Somalia Media Law does not adhere to international standards.

IFJ posted its displeasure on Twitter on Wednesday.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of the Federal Government of Somalia signed the new law on August 26.

However, after examining it, IFJ felt that it falls short of internationally acceptable standards.

Mostly, the international organization indicated that such an important piece of legislature fell short of guaranteeing press freedom.

The government of Somalia has been accused of failure to guarantee a good environment for journalists and media houses to work.

IFJ feels that in its current form, the amended Media Law creates environment that supports the intimidation, insecurity, and oppression of journalists around the country.
