IGAD and Somalia Advance Talks on Next Five-Year Regional Strategy

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia, has pressed forward with its consultation process on revising the IGAD Strategy 2021–2025 and shaping the new IGAD Strategy 2026–2030.

Day two of the consultation, held in Mogadishu, featured technical discussions and presentations that brought together representatives from various Somali national institutions. Ministries, government agencies, and development partners participated in the sessions, offering insights on national priorities while highlighting achievements made under the current strategic framework.

The deliberations focused on evaluating Somalia’s progress within IGAD’s regional integration agenda and identifying key areas of intervention for the next five years. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of aligning regional cooperation with Somalia’s development goals, particularly in peace and security, resilience building, economic integration, and climate change adaptation.

Officials noted that the forthcoming strategy must not only consolidate gains made between 2021 and 2025 but also anticipate emerging challenges across the Horn of Africa. The Somali government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with IGAD to ensure that the strategy reflects the realities and aspirations of both Somalia and the wider region.

The consultation process will continue with further technical inputs and high-level policy discussions, paving the way for a robust IGAD Strategy 2026–2030 that seeks to strengthen regional cooperation and sustainable development across member states.
