Illegal Fishing Costs Somalia over $300 Million, Says US

The United States has released a report detailing the cost of illegal fishing on the economy of Somalia.

According to the US, illegal fishing costs Somalia over $300 million.

A statement by the US government shows that the East African nation loses all that money annually. It blames this loss on illegal fishing that’s also unreported and unregulated.

Recently, authorities arrested 36 foreigners who were caught fishing in Somalia’s waters illegally.

This practice affects the livelihoods of tons of Somali fishermen while denying the country the much-needed revenue.

With a coastline measuring 3,333kms, Somalia struggles to secure its waters from illegal fishing.
