Mogadishu, Somalia – India has dispatched 10 tons of vital humanitarian assistance to Somalia, reinforcing its commitment to global solidarity and emergency relief efforts.
The consignment, which arrived this week, includes a wide range of critical medical supplies such as essential medicines, surgical items, hospital essentials, and biomedical equipment.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, the aid package was prepared as a direct response to Somalia’s urgent healthcare needs amid worsening humanitarian conditions caused by ongoing conflict, poverty, and recurrent climate shocks.
The Indian government emphasized that the assistance was delivered in partnership with local authorities and humanitarian agencies operating in Somalia to ensure timely distribution to those most in need.
“India continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Somalia. This assistance reaffirms our commitment to supporting friendly nations during times of distress,” the MEA said.
Somalia is currently grappling with multiple humanitarian crises, including widespread displacement, food insecurity, and a fragile health system strained by both conflict and climate-related disasters.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 6 million people in Somalia are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2025.
The Indian aid is expected to bolster ongoing medical relief efforts, particularly in regions where access to healthcare services remains extremely limited. Somali officials have welcomed the support, describing it as timely and deeply appreciated.
This delivery adds to India’s growing profile as a provider of South-South humanitarian assistance and reflects its broader strategic engagement with the African continent.
