Somaliland’s international partners have hailed the agreement signed between different political parties in the country.
Three of the country’s biggest political parties – Waddani Party, UCID, and Kulmiye – have embarked on discussions to move Somaliland closer to elections later this year.
The parties have agreed that nothing should stand in the country’s path towards holding local and parliamentary polls this year.
Somaliland has endured an uncertain period after a standoff emerged between these political parties leading to fears that the country would be unable to hold elections again.
The Horn of Africa nation last held elections in 2005.
Since then, any attempt to hold elections has been postponed as skirmishes and political instability emerges.
International partners issued a statement offering their support to the deal signed between the various political parties.
The partners said the agreement pushes the country a step closer to “improving the democratization process.”
President Musa Bihi Abdi met three of biggest critics and challengers on July 12 to sign the agreement.
