International Partners Urge Somalia to Embrace Political Consensus to Hold Timely Elections

International partners have told political leaders in Somalia to embrace consensus if the country is to hold timely elections.

In a statement released under United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM), the partners said one stakeholder cannot and should not impose electoral modalities.

UNSOM’s statement mentioned that a process dictated by only one stakeholder would lack the legitimacy that such historic elections need.

The international partners also expressed their “concern” at the recent developments around the country.

Specifically, they cited last Saturday’s events in the House of Representatives that led to the ouster of the immediate former Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Ali Khaire.

UNSOM’s statement also mentioned the role of political consensus ensuring that nothing disrupts the country’s reform agenda.

Further, they reminded Somalia’s leaders that they have to build consensus to prevent political instability from arising in the country.

Several nations signed the statement and these included UK, US, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, the EU, France, Finland, Ireland, Kenya, and Japan to mention a few.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also signed the statement urging Somalia’s political leaders to work together for common good.
