International partners have encouraged the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to implement the much-touted 30% women representation fully.

For decades, women and human rights advocates in Somalia have pushed for increased participation by women in politics and leadership.

The agitation for increased women representation in parliament reached a crescendo last year.

Several stakeholders promised to ensure that the increased quota is implemented in the next elections in the country.

Somalia is now due to hold parliamentary elections in January 2021 followed closely by presidential polls in February 2021.

On January 13, international partners issued a statement urging Somali leaders to ensure the full implementation of the 30 percent women’s quota in federal parliament.

They said that the country’s leadership has to commit fully to the increased quota as they promised to do in the September 17, 2020 pre-elections agreement.
