International partners have welcomed the decision by Somalia to resume talks designed to discuss ways of solving the ongoing impasse on elections.
Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, whose term as the President of Somalia expired on February 8, called for resumption of talks.
Farmaajo asked the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) to send their representatives to Garowe for resumption of talks from February 15.
Sources at Villa Somalia indicate that Farmaajo has now ceded to pressure from local politicians, civil society, and international community to move the talks to Mogadishu.
The country’s international partners commended Somalia’s leaders for this turn of events.
In its statement issued on February 13, the international partners said that it is time to “avoid unilateral actions” that could threaten the country’s stability.
Furthermore, they asked the leadership to “proceed quickly with the implementation of the agreement signed on September 17, 2020.”
The partners released their statement through the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
