Hargeisa – President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro delivered a powerful keynote address on Saturday night at the Presidential Palace, marking the 34th anniversary of Somaliland’s declaration of independence on May 18, 1991.
The event, held under tight security and vibrant national pride, celebrated Somaliland’s journey of resilience, peace, and democratic progress over the past three decades.
Speaking to an audience of government officials, traditional leaders, civil society members, and international observers, President Irro praised the people of Somaliland for their enduring commitment to peace, stability, and self-governance.
He highlighted the region’s achievements in building democratic institutions, conducting peaceful elections, and maintaining internal security in a volatile Horn of Africa region.
“Today, we honor the courage and determination of our people, who have built a peaceful and democratic society without the recognition of the world,” President Irro stated.
President Irro added that Somaliland is a testament to what African-led solutions can achieve when rooted in unity, dignity, and vision.
This year’s celebration was particularly symbolic, as it was the first held under President Irro’s administration following his election victory.
The President reiterated his government’s commitment to advancing Somaliland’s quest for international recognition and deepening democratic reforms.
As fireworks lit up the Hargeisa skyline and patriotic songs echoed through the capital, citizens across Somaliland expressed pride in their nation’s continued progress and called for greater global engagement with their de facto state.
The 18 May anniversary continues to serve as a unifying moment for Somalilanders at home and in the diaspora, reinforcing their aspirations for statehood, peace, and prosperity.
