Irro Secures U.S. Backing in Strategic Talks on Somaliland’s Regional Role

Hargeisa, Somaliland — President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro met today with senior officials from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a high-level session centered on security, partnership, and Somaliland’s growing strategic significance in the Horn of Africa.

The discussions focused on strengthening regional cooperation against shared threats, with an emphasis on counterterrorism, maritime security, and safeguarding democratic institutions. President Irro underscored Somaliland’s track record of peace and stability, presenting it as a vital partner for the U.S. in ensuring security across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden corridors.

In his remarks, the President expressed profound gratitude to the U.S. Congress for its continued bipartisan support for Somaliland’s aspirations. He highlighted what he described as “encouraging and constructive shifts” in Washington’s foreign policy approach, particularly in relation to the Horn of Africa, where Somaliland seeks recognition and stronger international partnerships.

Irro reaffirmed that Somaliland remains committed to democracy, peace, and responsible regional engagement, signaling that the country stands ready to deepen its role as a reliable ally of the United States and other global partners.

The AFRICOM officials, for their part, acknowledged Somaliland’s contributions to stability in a volatile region and pledged to explore further avenues of cooperation.

This meeting marks one of the most high-profile engagements between the new Somaliland administration and U.S. security officials since President Irro assumed office, signaling a potentially stronger alignment between Hargeisa and Washington at a time of shifting geopolitical currents in the Horn of Africa.
