ISIS Militants Beaten in Puntland as Operation Reaches Climax

BOSASO, Somalia – Recent airstrikes in Puntland, conducted by the US Africa Command, killed at least five militants, according to the military, reinforcing backing for local forces engaged in counterterrorism efforts in the Al-Miskaad mountains.

Reports indicate that the airstrikes on Saturday targeted the Baallade Valley in CAl-Miskaad, eliminating five militants on the spot. The operation is now in its final phase, with officials preparing for the concluding attack.

Security forces had difficulty pinpointing even a small group of five militants together. If verified, this implies the fighters are now confined to a specific zone and encircled by troops. Notably, no top leaders have been spotted.

The airstrike occurred in the Barakalah area of Baallade Valley within the Al-Miskaad mountains, executed by Puntland’s partners from the US. The US Africa Command and United Arab Emirates forces have collaborated closely with local troops.

Over recent months, numerous fighters have been eliminated, and dozens have surrendered to security forces, pointing toward an imminent success for the operation. The US Africa Command provides air support, while the Somali National Army has stayed largely sidelined in northern Somalia.

Somalia continues to combat violent extremist groups, amid perceptions that the government has underperformed in achieving outcomes. Analysts suggest the campaign against Al-Shabaab and ISIS militants could extend further.
