Jubbaland Asks Somalia’s Lower House to Stop Debating 2020-21 Elections

The administration of Somalia’s semiautonomous state of Jubbaland has asked the country’s Lower House to stop debating the upcoming elections in 2020 and 2021.

Somalia is scheduled to conduct parliamentary elections in October 2020 before holding presidential polls in February 2021.

Politicians around the country have been at loggerheads debating various aspects of the upcoming elections.

Top on the list is the system to use, though indications are that Somalia is now ready for the universal suffrage system.

Nevertheless, the Jubbaland leadership believes any debate and vote on the upcoming elections would be premature.

Consequently, it has requested the country’s Lower House to stop reading and debating or voting on any of the contentious clauses.
