Kenya Defense Force (KDF) contingent in African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are to start using weapons made locally.
A report by the Daily Nation, one of Kenya’s most popular daily newspapers, shows that the country is to arm its troops with weapons made in the country.
This is historic for KDF.
KDF’s 10th Battle Group (10BG), a unit that began moving into Somalia in early November, is set to be the first to use the weapons made and modified in Kenya.
10GB is to prepare the Kenyan troops to withdraw from Somalia, an arrangement that is part of the Somali Transition Plan (STP.
Kenya manufactured the weapons secretly.
It employed several young people in their 20s to take charge of modifying and making the weapons.
The young innovators hired for the work have been working on the project for the last two years under National Security Industrialization Projects.
National Intelligence Service (NIS) recruited the skilled and talented young men and women for the project from Kenya universities.
