Kenyan fish traders have urged their government to reopen the border with Somalia to grant them access to their clients.
The fish traders in Lamu blamed their woes on the decision by authorities to close the border.
Authorities imposed a cross-border ban in the region that has prevented fish traders from crossing to Somalia to access the market.
The ban has been in place since June 2019.
Kenya’s government imposed the ban to prevent human trafficking and the smuggling of contraband goods.
Terrorism has also been a huge problem in the region with Al-Shabaab extremists moving in between the two countries to carry out attacks or escape imminent arrest.
Lamu traders often buy dry fish from Kismayo and Mogadishu in Somalia.
Afterward, they travel back to Kenya to sell their products in Lamu, Kilifi, and Mombasa.
