Kenyan Legislator Claims Border Customs Office Will Ease Trading between the Two Countries

An MP from Wajir County in Kenya has said that the government must provide the border customs office with all the resources it needs to operate fully. He says the office will play a crucial role in easing trade between Kenya and Somalia.

The customs office is in Diff along the Kenya-Somali border. According to Mohamud Omar, the MP for Wajir South, such a move is important in boosting the economic activities of the local residents who rely on trade with their neighbors in Kenya to earn a livelihood.

MP Omar made these sentiments over a month since Kenyan authorities seized around 900 bags of contraband sugar, which is worth Kshs. 1.8m. Reports say the sugar, which was from Somalia, was seized while on sale in Wajir County.

MP Omar also believes that the office will enable Kenyan government to increase its revenue. He also affirms that the border customs office will play a critical role in enabling fair business transactions to take place between Kenyan and Somali traders.
