Kenya’s Foreign Affair Ministry Officials in Somalia to Discuss Strained Diplomatic Ties

A delegation of senior government officials from Kenya arrived in Mogadishu on November 7 to discuss strained diplomatic ties between both countries.

Kenya and Somalia have been at loggerheads diplomatically for the better part of a year.

Lately, the situation has been worsened by the decision of the Federal Government of Somalia to ban importation of miraa from Kenya.

Khat, popularly known as miraa, is Somalia’s biggest import from Kenya.

Miraa is highly popular with Somalis in the Horn of Africa region.

Kenya is arguably the largest grower of miraa in the region. Meru County in Kenya is renowned for growing the crop on large scale.

Macharia Kamau, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Kenyan delegation to Somalia to discuss strained relations.

He led other senior Kenyan government officers to arrive in Somalia on Saturday.
