Liberian Merchant Vessel Captured by Somali Pirates Finally Released

The Liberian-flagged merchant vessel “Basilisk” and its 17 crew members that had been captured by Somali pirates has finally been rescued by the European Union’s anti-piracy force.

Its rescue, together with the crew, underscores the effectiveness of international maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.

Since 2008, EU Naval Forces have played a critical role in countering piracy off the coast of Somalia, working closely with global partners to deter and respond to threats.

Their proactive measures, such as patrolling high-risk areas, escorting vessels, and sharing intelligence, have significantly reduced pirate activity in the region.

This latest incident reaffirms the continued importance of these operations for the safety of maritime trade and crew members navigating through these waters.
