Danab Commandos Capture Al-Shabaab Bomb-Making Cell Leader in Afgooye Operation

AFGOOYE — Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces have captured a senior Al-Shabaab operative responsible for coordinating bomb attacks in the Lower Shabelle region, along with two associates, during a planned operation in the Dadumaay area on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

The operation, conducted by the US-trained commandos, targeted a militant cell that had been active in the corridor between Kuntuwaarey and Afgooye, according to military officials. The captured leader was reportedly responsible for coordinating attacks and was described as a key figure in the group’s bomb-making network.

Military officials said the suspects were apprehended while in the act of planning attacks against civilians. A search of the area led to the recovery of weapons and materials linked to the preparation of explosive devices. The suspects are currently undergoing further interrogation.

Danab commandos have previously targeted Al-Shabaab leaders in the Lower Shabelle region, with prior operations resulting in the deaths of high-profile insurgents including a field commander. The commandos have also destroyed militant positions and recovered weapons and equipment in a series of operations in the region.

The Danab commandos have intensified operations across Lower and Middle Shabelle, targeting areas allegedly used by the militant group as hideouts and staging grounds in an effort to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s movements and degrade its operational capacity.

Intensified Campaign Against Al-Shabaab

The operation comes as the Somali government has renewed its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s announcement of a major offensive to liberate the country from the group. The Danab Special Forces, which have received extensive training and equipment from the United States, have been at the forefront of these operations, conducting targeted raids and ground offensives in southern and central Somalia.

Danab commandos have also carried out operations in the Sablaale district of Lower Shabelle, killing seven militants, including a senior commander, and destroying two training facilities used for extremist indoctrination.

The Danab commandos have dismantled terrorist hideouts and neutralized militant strongholds in Lower Shabelle, uncovering elaborate tunnel systems and concealed bunkers used by the Khawaarij militants.

While the capture of a senior Al-Shabaab bomb-making figure marks a tactical success, the broader campaign against the militant group continues to face significant challenges. Al-Shabaab has demonstrated resilience, adapting its tactics and maintaining its ability to carry out attacks despite sustained military pressure. The group continues to control large areas of southern and central Somalia and has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to exploit political divisions and weak state institutions. The effectiveness of operations like the one in Dadumaay will ultimately be measured by the government’s ability to maintain security in liberated areas, prevent the group from regrouping, and address the underlying drivers of conflict, including corruption, clan grievances, and economic marginalisation.

Concerns have also been raised about the impact of counter-terrorism operations on civilians. Previous Danab operations have resulted in civilian casualties, underscoring the need for strict adherence to international humanitarian law and robust oversight mechanisms to ensure that military actions do not undermine public trust or fuel further instability. As the government continues its push to secure liberated areas and extend state authority, sustained coordination between federal and regional forces will remain critical.
