Lord Goldsmith Hails Somaliland as an “Extraordinary Country”

London – Zac Goldsmith, a member of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords and former Minister for the International Environment and Climate at the UK Foreign Office, has described Somaliland as an “extraordinary country.”

Lord Goldsmith made the remarks while reflecting on his experience and engagement with Somaliland during his tenure in government.

His comments add to a growing chorus of international voices acknowledging the region’s stability and democratic credentials, particularly in contrast to the volatile Horn of Africa.

“Somaliland is an extraordinary country,” Goldsmith said. “Its democratic governance, resilience, and environmental commitment stand out in a region often defined by conflict and instability.”

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has since developed its own political institutions and held multiple peaceful elections. Despite lacking international recognition, it has built a reputation for relative peace, functional governance, and local-led development.

Observers note that such statements from prominent international figures may help amplify calls for greater engagement with Somaliland, particularly on issues of climate resilience, environmental protection, and regional cooperation.

Lord Goldsmith’s comments come amid increasing international focus on the Horn of Africa’s strategic importance and environmental challenges.
