Lower House Elects Somalia’s First Female Deputy Speaker

The House of the People (Lower House) has elected Somalia’s first-ever female Deputy Speaker.

Sa’dia Yasin Haji Samatar, one of Somalia’s most outspoken parliamentarians, emerged victorious in the elections held on April 28.

Lower House legislators were unable to conclude elections of the Deputy Speakers on Wednesday.

The reason for that was the elections for the Speaker of the Lower House went on until late at night.

Yasin beat Mohamed Ali Omar Ananug.

Consequently, she becomes the First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House.

Abdullahi Omar Abshirow defeated Mahad Abdalla Awad to become the Lower House’s Second Deputy Speaker.
