The House of Representatives has extended President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term in office by two more years.
The Lower House made this decision on April 12 after reconvening.
Earlier, there had been rumors that the Members of Parliament planned to extend his term, which expired on February 8, 2020.
An attempt by Brig. Gen. Sadiq Omar John, the Mogadishu Police Commander, to prevent parliament from reconvening saw him lose his job.
Gen. Abdi Hijar, the Somali Police Force (SPF) Commissioner, fired him immediately.
The decision by parliament to extend Farmaajo’s term kills all talks organized to find solutions for the electoral impasse that has lasted close to a year.
