Mayor Muungaab Launches Major Mogadishu Clean-Up Drive

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Muungaab, has launched a citywide cleaning campaign aimed at improving the capital’s cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, and environmental health.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Muungaab said the initiative seeks to transform Mogadishu into a cleaner, more attractive, and healthier city for its residents. He underscored that a well-maintained urban environment not only improves public health but also boosts civic pride and economic activity.

The campaign will involve municipal workers, local volunteers, and community groups, with plans to target litter hotspots, clear waste from streets and markets, and enhance waste management systems. Authorities also urged residents to actively participate by maintaining cleanliness in their neighborhoods and reducing indiscriminate dumping.

“This is not just about cleaning; it’s about changing our mindset and taking responsibility for our city,” Mayor Muungaab emphasized, calling on both the public and private sectors to support the drive.

The clean-up initiative comes as Mogadishu continues to recover from decades of conflict, with city officials prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, beautification projects, and sustainable urban development. Environmental health experts have welcomed the move, noting its potential to curb disease outbreaks linked to poor sanitation.
