Ministry of Agriculture Launches GAP Training to Boost Food Production

MOGADISHU — The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Eng. Mohamed Hassan Abdille, has officially launched a crucial Training of Trainers (ToT) program heavily focused on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for key Somali cereal crops.

Promoting Sustainable Farming Practices

The comprehensive training program, which utilizes specialized agricultural manuals, aims to significantly enhance the capabilities of agricultural extension workers operating within the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, alongside other agencies providing vital extension services to local farmers.

According to ministry officials, this initiative intends to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to actively promote sustainable farming methods and improve food production nationwide. This strategic focus closely aligns with the broader resilience goals outlined in the national climate and development report recently launched in Mogadishu.

A Collaborative National Approach

The specialized training is a strategic collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Somali National University, and SomRep—a broad coalition of international organizations deeply involved in regional agricultural development.

Participants include key agricultural extension workers drawn from both the federal and state levels, directly demonstrating a unified national approach to improving overall agricultural practices. The intensive sessions, which commenced on March 23 and will continue until March 27, effectively bring together key stakeholders to systematically advance Somalia’s agricultural sector through critical knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives.

By actively strengthening these essential extension services, the government expects the program to significantly support local farmers, boost crop productivity, and fortify long-term food security across all of Somalia.
