Mogadishu Court Sentences a Would-Be Suicide Bomber to Life Imprisonment

On Tuesday, a military court sitting in Mogadishu sentenced a would-be suicide bomber to life in prison.

The sentencing was meted after a trial that lasted close to one year.

Somalia has a shortage of functional courts. The country’s judiciary is almost non-existent after decades of conflicts and a dysfunctional government.

Consequently, it often falls on military courts to hear and determine some of the cases, especially those revolving around terrorism.

Al-Shabaab militants have caused untold suffering and chaos in the region.

Said Biriq Mohamud, who was training with the Al-Qaeda linked group on suicide bombing, is now set to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Furthermore, he was not given the option of appealing the sentence.

The prosecution was able to table evidence linking Mohamud with a botched suicide bombing in June 2019 in Mogadishu.
