Mogadishu Municipality Launch Major Flood Evacuation and Drainage Operation

The Benadir Regional Administration and the Mogadishu Municipality have jointly launched a large-scale emergency operation to evacuate residents affected by ongoing heavy rains and to clear water from the city’s main roads.

The initiative comes as torrential downpours continue to flood several neighborhoods in the Somali capital, displacing families and disrupting daily life.

The operation, which began earlier on Friday, focuses on the most affected districts, where roads have become impassable and homes have been inundated.

Local authorities have deployed heavy machinery, emergency response teams, and municipal workers to pump out floodwaters and assist vulnerable communities.

“We are working around the clock to respond to the immediate needs of our people and to restore access to key roads and infrastructure,” said an official from the Benadir administration.

Community leaders and residents have welcomed the intervention, calling for sustained support as the rains are expected to continue in the coming days.

Authorities have also urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to relocate to safer zones as a precautionary measure.

Emergency shelters have been set up across the city to house those displaced by the flooding.

This coordinated effort underscores the government’s commitment to disaster response and urban resilience, amid growing concerns over climate-related challenges facing Somalia’s capital.
