Mogadishu Prison Commander Says Inmates Killed Guards to Obtain Weapons

Gen. Mahad Abdirahman has clarified that the four inmates who attempted to escape from Mogadishu’s main central prison killed guards to obtain weapons.

Gen. Abdirahman, who is the Commander of the Prison Guards, says one inmate snatched a gun from a guard forcefully before killing him.

Afterward, his fellow inmates found a second guard from who snatched a second gun before killing him too.

However, reports from other sources say the inmates did not use guns only. They said the inmates also had grenades and three other pistols.

According to those sources, the grenades and pistols the inmates used had been smuggled into the prison in the form of food and other personal items they are entitled to from their visitors.

Further reports now indicate that three of the inmates were shot dead while the other one escaped. The escapee killed a tuktuk driver and another civilian before taking off.
