Mogadishu Refugees Fear Death as Coronavirus Enters Somalia

Refugees in Mogadishu have heard about the arrival of the deadly Coronavirus in the country. A 40-year Asho Abdullahi Hassan heard about the news on radio.

The mother of seven says, “I am scared about the virus. In my opinion, we are only waiting for death. We are waiting for the deadly virus to kill us.”

She is in Nabadoon Refugee Camp, which lies just outside Mogadishu, with other 3,000 refugees. The refugees are part of the recent internally displaced persons (IDPs).

They were displaced from the Lower Shabelle Region of the country when fighting increased substantially in the country. More were displaced as the number of US airstrikes ballooned too.

According to humanitarian activists, the virus would be impossible to stop in such camps. They blame the lack of or non-existence of sanitary precautions and social distancing.
