Mogadishu, Somalia – Federal Member of Parliament Yasin Abdullahi Mohamud Farey has voiced strong suspicions of arson in connection with the massive fire that tore through Suuq Bacaad, Mogadishu’s second-largest marketplace, on Monday night.
The inferno, which left extensive destruction in its wake, claimed at least three lives and incinerated hundreds of stalls, dealing a heavy blow to small traders and daily wage earners who rely on the bustling commercial hub in the capital’s Yaqshid district.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, MP Farey stated, “Given the scale and sudden spread of the fire, I believe it was deliberately set. This is not a normal accident. We demand a thorough investigation to uncover the truth.”
His remarks have stirred public concern and renewed calls for greater market security and accountability. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as firefighters battled the blaze well into the night, hampered by narrow alleys and limited access.
Authorities have since launched an official probe to determine the cause of the fire. The Banadir Regional Administration has pledged support to the affected traders, and the Ministry of Internal Security is reportedly coordinating with police to assess possible foul play.
This is not the first time Suuq Bacaad has suffered from fire incidents, raising questions about the adequacy of safety measures in one of the city’s key commercial lifelines.
As investigations continue, MP Farey’s comments have added urgency to a growing public demand for answers, justice, and long-term preventive solutions to safeguard the livelihoods of thousands who depend on the market.
