Mursal Urges Somali Parliament to Solve Electoral Impasse after Elections Talks Collapsed

Mohamed Abdirahman Mursal, the Speaker of Somalia’s Lower House, urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to solve the ongoing elections impasse.

Speaker Mursal urged his fellow legislators to respond to the nation’s need at its darkest hour.

He made this call on February 6 when President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo held a session with the House of Representatives.

Mursal’s call came a day after the National Consultative Conference in Dhusamareb collapsed without any elections deal signed.

The Lower House Speaker said that it is now the responsibility of parliament to find new solutions for the impasse.

There is great uncertainty whether the East African nation would be able to hold either parliamentary or president elections.

Parliamentary polls have been delayed significantly after failing to take place thrice already.

Presidential elections should be taking place by February 8, when President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term expires, but they also look increasingly unlikely.
