A new generation of desert locusts has invaded Somaliland, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) confirmed on December 28.
On Monday, FAO issued a communiqué stating that a new batch of the destructive locusts is in the breakaway region of Somaliland.
As per the communiqué, the invasion has been recorded in not only Somaliland, but also Puntland, a semiautonomous region in Somalia.
FAO said that the locusts are breeding afresh after Cyclone Gati made a landfall in Puntland, Somalia towards the end of November 2020.
Currently, FAO and some of Somalia’s international partners, including the Federal Government of Somalia, have launched several control operations.
