New Media Law Introduced to Somaliland Cabinet for Approval

During the 132nd Council of Ministers meeting, Minister Ali Hassan Mohamed (Ali Mareehan) introduced a new media law designed to replace the outdated LR.27/2004 media law.

Mareehan introduced the law to his colleagues during this week’s cabinet meeting, which was chaired by President Muse Bihi Abdi.

The old law was considered full of gaps and failing to address the current realities as well as needs of Somaliland’s media landscape.

The new proposal aims to modernize media regulations, ensuring better protection of journalists’ rights, enhancing press freedom, and adapting to the evolving digital media environment.

This reform is expected to significantly impact the media industry in Somaliland while fostering a more transparent and accountable environment for information dissemination.
