The new Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NSA) has reported to office only a few hours after his appointment by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
Reports from Mogadishu indicate Colonel Yasin Abdullahi Mohamud Farey already reported to the NISA headquarters to start work.
This has been a tumultuous week for NISA and the political actors in Somalia.
First, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble sacked Fahad Yasin as the NISA Director. Farmaajo then rejected this move and ordered Yasin to remain in office saying that Roble’s move was “unconstitutional.“
On Tuesday, September 7, President Farmaajo said that Yasin had resigned as the chief spy.
Immediately, he appointed Col. Farey to take over from Yasin.
Farmaajo took this decision knowing fully well that Prime Minister Roble had already appointed Maj. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama to take over as the NISA head.
NISA released a statement on September 8 stating that Col. Yasin had reported to office.
Fahad has been a close ally of President Farmaajo for years. The new NISA head, Col. Farey, is also a close ally of Fahad.
