Newly Signed Deal Protects Journalists’ Right to Report on Somalia Elections

The newly signed electoral deal between Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States protects the rights of journalists to report on the upcoming elections.

There had been fears that the ongoing clampdown on journalists and media houses by authorities would make it hard for reporters to do their job.

However, FGS and FMS leaders agreed on the inviolability of freedom of expression.

Moreover, they inserted a stipulation that ensures all barriers are removed thus enabling journalists to report right from the polling stations.

As per the agreement, the rights of journalists are protected under Somalia’s Provisional Constitution.
