The newly signed elections deal between Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States stipulates that Somaliland Member of Parliaments (MPs) should be elected in Mogadishu.
After more than a week of talks between FGS and FMS leaders, the two sides announced a breakthrough deal on Thursday evening.
One of the stipulations included in the deal is that Somaliland MPs to the Lower House and Upper House should be elected in Somalia’s capital.
Political leaders in Somaliland are likely to be horrified at the news.
For decades, Somaliland has told the Somalia government that it is an independent nation after breaking away from the latter in 1991.
However, authorities in Somalia continue treating Somaliland as one of its many regions. Several MPs represent Somaliland in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
